How To Do At-Home Nail Designs

Step 1
First, of course, you will want to prepare your nails. You do not necessarily need to have the perfect manicure to apply any type of nail art; however, it will look best if your nails are clean, evenly trimmed and have been shaped nicely. Do so by cleaning your nails thoroughly with a nail brush, pushing back the cuticles, using a nail file to shape your nails and then buffing them slightly.

Step 2
Experiment to find out items that work best for you. There are many brands to choose from to do nail art. You can also buy kits that come with all you need, such as brushes and marbling tools.

Step 3
Find the design you wish to apply to your nails. You may look at nail places, through books and magazines, or on the Internet. Many nail kits will come with designs that you can choose from. Or, simply make up your own creation!

Step 4
Have a supply of cotton balls and pure acetone nail-polish remover on hand so that any mistakes can be fixed quickly. Choose a place to do your nail art where spills can be handled easily.

Step 5
Brush on a base coat before you start your nail art. Choose a strong base, in whatever color you choose. You may want to apply two coats of nail polish to make sure it is dark enough. Always allow enough drying time for your nails before you begin your art.

Step 6
Start your nail art on top of the base cost. Here is where the fun comes in. You can choose to do stripes, dots or dashes using your nail polish brush. Fine brushes can be used to create any design you choose. Marbling tools bought from the store can create a beautiful effect -- just smear the polish around the nail and, when dry, apply a different shade to the nail and smear again. You can experiment with many different art designs, and choose the one you like the most!

Step 7
Apply stickers or gems to your nails, if wanted. Do this by using nail glue and tweezers to hold the item and set on your nail. Dip them into the nail glue first, and then set down carefully on the nail. Glitter can also be added -- just gently shake your desired product onto wet nails.

Step 8
After you have finished your nail art, apply one to two top coats of clear, protective coating to protect your nails from chips and other wear. Make sure to allow plenty of time for drying.
